I feel like most of my critiques are readily obvious for the standard game critic, especially its terribly-sparse launch accessibility settings for a Sony title.
The Astro Bot series was critically acclaimed for its utilization of PlayStation hardware and the platform’s history for gameplay and world design purposes. Astro Bot received PlayStation 5 Pro support and new, more challenging levels back in February. Team Asobi’s platformer won numerous Game of the Year awards, including at 2024’s The Game Awards and the 2025 BAFTA Awards.
This was a relatively open race, with no runaway front-runner, which gave the 2024 awards a little extra frisson of excitement. But in reality, Team Asobi’s delightful platformer was perfectly placed to take an easy route down the middle to gaming’s top prize. Astro Bot took home four awards — it also won Best Game Direction, Best Action/Adventure Game, and Best Family Game — making it the biggest winner of the night.
Nebulax grabs Astro to try to take him down with him, but the crew take hold of Astro to try to pull him back. Refusing to let the crew sacrifice themselves for him, Astro lets go of them and falls into the black hole, which explodes into a supernova. Music is an important part of pretty much every video game, but these titles take their soundtracks to a whole new level. If you’re a long-time platformer fanatic, it’s a no brainer to pick this game up.
The Game’s Story Is Simple And Easy To Understand
The gimmicks introduced in the game are reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey’s level design, where stages have a central gimmick that you have to work around. These could range from dashes, magnets, extendable arms, or anything of the sort. While some of these are repeated, these same gimmicks are mixed with more interesting overall level designs to keep things fresh. To proceed, all I have to do is run forward and rub a magic lamp by moving left and right.
Perhaps there is some sort of museum archive if you 100% the game but for the vast majority of players, they’ll have no idea who most of the characters are. If we don’t know then we’re sure more casual gamers are going to be even more lost, especially as so many of them look like generic anime characters. The levels are well designed and mostly linear, with small open range areas here and there. The controls are extremely simple, with Astro having a double jump and the ability to glide short distances, similarly to Yoshi’s flutter jump, with his little jet boots. The latter can be used to damage enemies from above or Astro has a basic punch attack – all of which is exactly as it’s been in previous games.

Thus, naturally, RPG fans would’ve settled with any of these games clinching the GOTY.
Eventually, Astro Bot reaches and defeats the Alien, giving the crew a peaceful ending. Astro Bot might be the best game out right now to make use of the DualSense special features. The use of haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and gyro controls makes the game’s simple mechanics shine even more as it adds so much to the gameplay. Not only this, but the game even makes use of the controller’s speakers to make the game even more immersive.
When something that’s meant to united the industry happens, like the Game Awards, some people are so dedicated to the games they love, their immediate reaction to the wider world not sharing the same opinion is to lash out. Or, on the other side, celebrate wildly with validation when the game they like is recognized. Outside of bosses and minibosses, there initially doesn’t appear to be a great range in enemy types.
