Astro Bot is PlayStation’s exclusive 3D adventure platformer that features Astro’s journey to rescue his fellow crewmates DENSUSTOTO and fix up the mothership. Read our review to see what it did well, what it didn’t do well, and if it’s worth buying. While “toy” has become a derogatory term when talking about video games, Team Asobi sees no shame in embracing it. I can see that when I find a cardboard standee in a construction site level. I poke my head through it, only to summon a flock of pooping pigeons. There’s no tangible reward for doing it as it’s not a tracked collectible; it’s just a purely entertaining moment that gets an honest laugh out of me.
Astro Bot on PS5 feels like the culmination of every Team Asobi project before it. Given how many mascots Sony has lost over the years (this game’s constant cameos certainly reminded me of that!), I’m completely on board with them adopting the little bot as their new face. During this epic adventure Astro will reunite with over 150 iconic heroes from PlayStation history, helping to kick off celebrations for the 30th anniversary of PlayStation. That includes the Lovestruck Lyricist, an homage to PaRappa the Rapper, the Yharnam Hunter, an homage to Bloodborne, and many more. It is no surprise that a game like Astro Bot could be the big winner of the Game Awards.
Give Astro Bot a chance to complete a full dance with Crash Bandicoot to collect the Let’s Twist Again trophy. If you give Kratos Bot a friendly punch at your Crash Site, he’ll use his axe to freeze you into an ice cube. Well, to unlock the “Thaw, God of Thunder!” trophy in Astro Bot, you need to trick Kratos Bot into freezing Thor Bot instead. Trophy in Astro Bot in the Slo-Mo Casino world of Serpent Starway.

I’ve grown out of platformers as I’ve aged, but this looks to bring me back! I think I’ll actually buy the game now because it seems absolutely wonderful. The news that fans can expect more Astro Bot was met with praise, though some hoped it would not lead to a yearly release schedule. Part of Astro Bot’s success was the lengthy development time and attention given to the game. Many hope Sony will simply let Team Asobi do its thing and are perfectly content giving the next game the time it needs. You must complete the Great Master Challenge in order to find and collect Chop Chop Master Onion Special Bot.

Astro Bot is also meant to be a DualSense showcase, and it certainly does a lot there, though I continue to feel like the controller’s most passionate fans are within the company itself. In the few instances where the hero isn’t wearing an ability, the game still finds ways to reinvent itself. But once that awesome level was finished, I never saw the mechanic used again. Astro Bot feels like it’s showing off at times, but never in a way that pats itself on its back. It’s ceaselessly cute and clever, and feels more like a little kid delighted to show you their toy collection than a braggart displaying their trophies. The only ability that doesn’t work as cleanly as others is the one used in an underwater level.
With voice roles, you can ensure users get a specific role when they are inside a specific voice channel. It’s a really powerful feature which unlocks many different scenarios. Astro focuses exclusively on the voice aspect of Discord and improves it with some unique and advanced features. Astro Bot is special, a beaming reminder that bright, unfettered play is a truly wonderful thing. While enemies and themes could have used more variety, Astro Bot is a sure-fire Game of the Year contender and poised to be one of PlayStation 5’s signature titles that’s well deserving of said namesake. For what it is, though, Astro Bot is incredible, and that is worth celebrating here and now.
Regardless, Astro Bot has that Nintendo feel of Mario’s best, and a controller that has features that are additive and immersive toward the whole experience. When Astro Bot was first announced, no one could have anticipated just how big the platformer would be. Even though it was hardly the little robot’s first adventure, it was the first one that was more than a simple tech demo or VR experience.
Astro’s Playroom would launch in 2020 pre-installed on every PS5, and once again served as a tech demo for the studio’s latest controller. Then, in 2024, players were treated to the full-length critically acclaimed platformer Astro Bot. Besides many of Astro Bot’s creative and exciting boss battles, nostalgia fuels much of Astro Bot’s most thrilling moments, especially with the few stages specifically themed after PlayStation’s most beloved properties. However, those experiences risk feeling hollow for those who haven’t played the games that Astro Bot seems desperate to reference. This is a grand re-opening for Astro Bot, and it surely marks the start of what is destined to be a beloved series shooting for the moon. It seems odd to say I don’t want to spoil a game that effectively has no story, but some of the game’s best secrets really must be discovered with your own eyes.
Not bad for a company whose CFO just publicly stated that the platform holder doesn’t have enough original IP. All of this accounts for just a portion of what makes Astro Bot so interesting and fun. The technology is important but the core design and what they do with it is what made me fall in love with the game. Firstly, when talking platform games, getting the basic move set and control nailed down is crucial. This has always been a strong point for Nintendo and Team Asobi as well have managed to pull it off. Astro’s basic running and jumping have a satisfying feel and rhythm to them.
At your base, you can also use coins in a vending machine to unlock items for these themed bots, giving them little motifs that you can interact with. While Astro Bot is on the shorter side than most other games, with the main campaign running only around 12 hours, this is still an experience that players shouldn’t rush through. The levels throughout Astro Bot are some of the best platforming in all of gaming; players should take as long as they need to take it all in. Every stage is crafted with intent, as nothing feels out of place.
The creativity is there no doubt and people wanting a break or something to mix in from the cinematic games or just something to play in depseration. But I think this all the time with videos I watch/games I play/research and end up with large comments like this. I was sunder the impression that Astro’s Playroom especially blew their minds to people who never played the actual VR game. I will sound old, but kids today don’t understand how games like these would probably create much better gaming experiences and fun memories than most modern, grindy, live service trash.

I won’t talk about the other buildings players can build in Astro Bot’s hub world, but rest assured they are great as well, giving players extra incentive to hunt down every single collectible. The bird costs 200 coins, so players have to give up some gacha pulls to use it, but it’s a great way to keep players from getting stuck. Every time I’d divert off the main path in search of a secret or reward, I would find one.
I just think people would enjoy the game more without this kind of hand-holding from day one. It is merely a resource, and it absolutely makes all the sense in the world to have it ready as soon as possible and there’s nothing wrong with that approach at all. @get2sammyb @Quintumply Thanks for taking the time to make this guide. Not sure I’ll use it, unless I get really stuck trying to find something, but still appreciated.
