This new expansion not only adds an entire new area to The naked link Lands Between to explore, but a suite of new weapons, armors, and even combat styles like martial arts, makes FromSoftware’s magnum opus even better. For many who stick with one game throughout the years, 2024 has delivered some great expansions. Destiny 2’s newest update, The Final Shape, is a worthwhile finale to Bungie’s long-running shooter, while World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, The War Within, kicks off a new start for Blizzard’s beloved MMORPG. Each class also gets a thematic ability that costs three points to use. My favorite use of Hope points is the tag team attack where once per session a player gets to describe how they and another player do a big, flashy combo and both roll attack and damage to put the hurt on a brutal bad guy. Daggerheart, from Darrington Press with the support of Critical Role, is now in the hands of role playing fans around the world.
It’s capped at 30fps when docked but it looks almost indistinguishable from the PlayStation 5 version. It’s possible to just enter some public figure’s house, have a look around, open their chests and lockboxes, rob them of their coins, and the worst I’ll receive is a mild scolding. Check out our in-depth performance test for more details on how the game runs from our expert hardware team. We’ve tested Avowed on multiple devices, and discovered the best graphics settings to use to make your adventure as smooth and sumptuous as possible.
That was after multiple crashes before that point, and I also had to reload saves because I fell through the world multiple times and got stuck on level geometry. But it’s not just simply a beefy expansion with loads of content. The world of Elden Ring is rich with lore and the story Shadow of the Erdtree tells adds new layers to that rich text. The backstories for characters like Queen Marika and Miquella are both enlightening and tragic, and the sense of discovery players get when uncovering these secrets prove that nobody does world design quite like FromSoftware.

This doesn’t make Avowed bad—I loved it—but it’s symptomatic of one area where it falls short compared to its contemporaries, not to mention the first-person Bethesda games it’s clearly modelled on. I can’t attack anyone at will and suffer the consequences (though the narrative stages ample opportunities for me to kill or have mercy). Likewise, while stealth is an option, it’s usually just a means to get an upper hand on a particular foe. Once I’ve attacked—whether from cover or using an invisibility spell—every baddie in the vicinity knows I’m there. But while this is a very good game, with time I came to understand that its ambitions are a touch more humble than some recent genre heavyweights. I realised that it might be more flattering to think of Avowed as a choice-based narrative-driven action game.
This expansion is so big it practically feels like a sequel. Nintendo will sell consoles because fans can’t get enough of its exclusive games. At the time of this writing—two weeks after launch—all signs already point to the Switch 2 being a mega mushroom-sized success. People worldwide turned up on launch day in record numbers—many even attending midnight launches—to buy Nintendo’s new game system. Nintendo’s already shattered global sales records with over 3.5 million Switch 2 units sold within its first four days of going on sale.

You get more performance, a bigger and sharper screen, Joy-Con 2 controllers that now magnetically attach and support mouse controls for exciting possibilities in shooters and real-time strategy games, and GameChat video and voice communications. The Switch 2 hardware is iterative—a specs bump—but it’ll also be the exclusive platform for Nintendo’s biggest and most recognizable gaming franchises. If you want to play Nintendo’s latest and greatest titles, like the now-available Mario Kart World or the upcoming Donkey Kong Bananza, the Switch 2 is the only option, even if you have a PS5 or Xbox Series S/X. There’s no question that this is a great game, but the problem is that this is not the ideal way to experience it.
The company also turned heads this week by luring away Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins from Dungeons and Dragons. You want a challenging survival MMO that’s connected to its settingBetween sunstroke, thirst and the constant threat of sand (worms and storms), Dune Awakening’s survival mechanics do well to complement its sci-fi setting. Thankfully, when the combat excursions start to get old, you can tackle story missions called the Trials of AQL, which arrive as alternate challenges that test your dexterity while explaining the history of the Fremen. Hidden amongst the craggy horizons, the trials felt like a carefully constructed extension of the lore, rewarding your attention with gear essential to survival long term. It’s clear Funcom cares about the material that the studio is adapting, and the involved and thoughtful Trials feel like proof of that.
Take-Two didn’t send out review copies for this game and given there’s only two reviews on Metacritic we’re guessing that was the same for everyone. It’s a shame, because the PC-orientated design is perfect for showing off the Switch 2’s mouse controls, but we’ve no idea how well it does or doesn’t work. The Metacritic scores are 60 and 70 though, so that doesn’t sound too promising. Mind you, the original PC version wasn’t great either and while that will likely change over time here’s our launch review. There are lots of other modes beyond just that, including one that adds minor role-playing elements, so it’s perhaps no surprise that the only other thing they could think of for the Switch 2 version is a new 2v2 option. Apart from that, a resolution bump, and mouse controls (which don’t work at all well) this is the exact same game that’s already available on the Switch and, like Sonic X Shadow Generations, there’s no upgrade option, if you already own the previous version.
One of the last to be announced was this new version of space exploration game No Man’s Sky, which we’ve not played but has proven very popular, if the eShop charts are anything to go by. There’re only three scores on Metacritic so far (it takes four to get an aggregate), of 90, 90, and 100. As simplistic and shallow as it is, the game is still as much fun as ever, with this version also adding a time attack mode and allowing for rewinds and VRR support.
