Demon’s Souls has archstones that players can use to fast-travel to the Nexus, a hub world where they do their leveling, purchase items, and more. Archstones are far rarer than bonfires, oftentimes only appearing in areas where players have defeated one of the game’s many powerful bosses. The lack of bonfires means that Demon’s Souls has far less checkpoints and it’s also more difficult to level grind in this game compared to the titles that followed.

But Demon’s Souls drastically transformed FromSoftware’s reputation and design philosophy, introducing the world to Hidetaka Miyazaki as a game director. It’s small by Elden Ring standards, but worth experiencing firsthand nevertheless. Get ready for one of the best early strength-based weapons in the game.

The Crescent Falchion is great for magic users to grab early on. This weapon comes as a +1 and can be used for most of the early game without needing to be upgraded. One of the main builds that use the Crescent Falchion is the Soul Mage. Other items that players should use are the Ring of Magical Sharpness and the Monk’s Head Wrap. Demon’s Souls Remake has the same addictive magic as the original title. Also the same high degree of difficulty along with excellent content quality.

On that note, a flash back to Demon’s Souls’ frame-rate on PS3 is a great reminder that there is a lot of room for improvement. From the very first areas in Boletaria, you could count on a drop to 12 frames per second every time a dragon wreaks havoc on those initial bridges. The combination of multiple enemies, broad draw distance, and lots of full-res alpha for fire, really hammered Sony’s machine.
